Pilots of the North-Western Basin Branch support trials of the Alexander Sannikov icebreaker

Pilots of the Vyborg and Vysotsk Directorate of the North-Western Basin Branch, Nikolai Bogomolov and Valery Grishuk, successfully pulled the Alexander Sannikov head icebreaker out of the waters of the Vyborg shipyard to the pilot’s station on Vikhrevoy Island on May 19, 2018 to carry out sea trials.

The icebreaker was moved by two tugboats, the Asteriy and the Spartak, with the propulsion plant of the vessel in off-design conditions and the cross-wind of 8-10 meters per second. The distance of pilotage was 15 nautical miles.

The Alexander Sannikov head icebreaker of Aker ARC 130A Project with the length of 121 meters, the breadth of 25 meters and the capacity of 21.5 MW was built under order of LLC “Gazpromneft. New Port”.

The icebreaker can operate in consolidated ice with the thickness of about 2 meters and the speed of 2 nautical knots while it moves forward by nose and by stern. The vessel has been designed under the “zero discharge” principle. All solid and liquid wastes are kept aboard the vessel and disposed of on the coast.

The Administration PJSC “Vyborg Shipyard” has expressed gratitude to pilots of the Vyborg and Vysotsk Directorate of the North-Western Basin Branch for their successful work and pilotage of the icebreaker.
