Celebration of Submariner Day

In the framework of preparation to the 70 years of Victory anniversary the officers of the North-Western Basin Branch Kaliningrad Department were invited to participate in celebration events devoted to the Submariner Day and honoring the memory of submariners who fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945.

Students and cadets of naval academies, of Baltic State Academy of fishery fleet and employees of FSBI “Administration of Baltic Seaports” participated in the celebration events as well.

The Head of the North-Western Basin Branch Kaliningrad Department Andrey Moshkov said commemorative speech for submariners – heroes of the Great Patriotic War.

The Submariner Day is a professional holiday celebrated every year on 19th March by military men and civilian personnel of submarine forces of Russian Navy.

The holidays origins on 19th March (on 6th March on old style) 1906, when Russian Emperor Nicholas II issued a decree issued a decree declaring submarines a separate class of warships and including ten submarines into the Russian Navy.

During the Great Patriotic War submariners undertook more than 1200 military campaigns resulting in sinking of more than 100 warships and 300 pieces of transport of the enemy. Over six thousand submariners were awarded with orders and medals, 21 of which got the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
