In memory of Tallinn Crossing

On August, 19th, 2010 the last voyage of “Georg Ots” ferry on the Saint-Petersburg – Baltiysk – Saint-Petersburg route started.

In the end of August the ferry will be transferred to the seaport of Vladivostok and will be used there on local ferry lines and for servicing of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in 2012.

Besides regular passengers “Georg Ots” ferry took relatives of the sailors fallen in August 1941 during Tallinn Crossing – an evacuation of the Baltic Fleet from the encircled city of Tallinn to Leningrad.

In August 1941 getting through the mine fields under the air attacks and saving the sinking ships and people, the participants of the action demonstrated exceptional mass heroism. About 60 ships were destroyed and over 15 thousand people died, but main fleet units reached Leningrad and played great part in its defense.

FSUE “Rosmorport” answered the request of Marine Council at the Government of Saint-Petersburg and granted the relatives of the Tallinn Crossing participants with free return ferry tickets to Baltyisk to let them visit the place of the tragic events in memory of the fallen.
