Vysotsk VTS Prevents Accident in the Vyborg Bay

On January 1, 2016 Vysotsk VTS operators of the North-Western Basin Branch prevented a threat of collision of ELISE motor ship (flag of Antigua and Barbuda) with oncoming vessel and its stranding in the area of the Kiperot peninsula.

The ELISE motor ship, proceeding from the seaport of Lübeck (Germany) to the seaport of Siilinjärvi (Finland), when entering the Vysotsk VTS coverage area and for one and a half hours of cruising, did not respond in accordance with established requirements to the Vysotsk VTS operator's calls, made with the use of all technical means. When the vessel was proceeding in direction of the Saimaa Canal, there arose a real threat of collision with BALTIC FAITH tanker (flag of Gyprus), proceeding from the seaport of Vysotsk to the seaport of Le Havre, or possibility of eventual stranding in the area of the peninsula Kiperot, that could result in human casualties and serious environmental damage.

In order to prevent the possibility of emergency situation, the duty shift staff of the Vysotsk VTS organized in accordance with the requirements of governing regulatory documents operational cooperation with the Coast Guard of the Federal Border Service of Russia, pilot organizations, the sea agent of the vessel, as well as the crews of other vessels in the immediate vicinity in order to make a decision on specialist's embarkation on the motor boat. Due to the professional actions of the Vysotsk VTS staff and directly of the shift supervisor Alexey Safronov, the emergency situation had been prevented. A member of the VIKING pilot boat crew boarded the ELISE motor boat and, in order to prevent an accident, managed to intervene and regain steering control of the vessel, which had been lost by the crew of the ELISE motor boat.
