North-Western Basin Branch Icebreakers Participate in Icebreaker Festival

In St. Petersburg during the period from 3 to 4 May, 2014 for the first time ever the mega event will take place – the Icebreaker Festival coincided with 150 year anniversary of the Russian icebreaker fleet. The event was organized by The World Ocean Museum Branch in St. Petersburg Icebreaker “Krasin” in cooperation with the FSUE “Rosmorport” North-Western Basin Branch with support of the Marine Council under the Government of St. Petersburg.

In the framework of the festival five working icebreakers of the North-Western Basin Branch – Sankt-Peterburg, Moskva, Mudeyug, Ivan Kruzenshtern and Kapitan Zarubin – will be moored along the Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment and the English Embankment.

During the two days at 11 am to 6 pm the vessels will be opened for anybody for free. Visitors will be able to explore the decks of icebreakers and get acquainted with their unique engineering structures.

Besides, within the celebration of the Russian icebreaker fleet anniversary on April 29-30 on the Krasin icebreaker-museum the scientific-practical conference “Russian Icebreaker Fleet - History and Perspectives” will be held. Its goal is to understand the historical experience of the construction and operation of icebreakers in Russia and abroad, and to define the development prospects of the icebreaker fleet as a unique feature of Russia.

Icebreakers Festival in St. Petersburg and other port cities of Russia is supposed to be held regularly.
