The national flag of the Russian Federation was raised on the Viktor Chernomyrdin icebreaker in the presence of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin

The national flag of the Russian Federation was raised today on the Viktor Chernomyrdin icebreaker of FSUE "Rosmorport" in the presence of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin. The icebreaker was built as part of the "Transport System Development" Federal Target Program. The solemn ceremony was held in Saint Petersburg.

Yevgeny Ditrich, the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, Alexander Beglov, the Governor of Saint Petersburg, and Andrey Lavrishchev, the FSUE "Rosmorport" General Director also attended the ceremony.

The diesel-electric linear icebreaker has 25 MW capacity and is the world's largest and most powerful non-nuclear icebreaker. It was built to ensure the uninterrupted piloting of vessels in the Gulf of Finland. The icebreaker can also operate in the Arctic and the Antarctic.

The Viktor Chernomyrdin has an Icebreaker8 ice class and is able to accelerate up to 17.8 knots in open water, pass ice up to 2 meters thick at a continuous running at a speed of 2 knots. Besides, the icebreaker can perform operations in ice up to 3 meters.

This is a modern, high-tech and maneuverable vessel. The icebreaker has the highest automation class and can be controlled from the bridge by just one person.

The multifunctional icebreaker has two helipads. It is able to not only provide icebreaker assistance but also participate in scientific expeditions, transport containers and dangerous goods. The crew consists of 38 people. The Victor Chernomyrdin can take on board 90 people of special personnel. Depending on the tasks assigned to this vessel, these can be members of scientific expeditions, workers, or representatives of contracting organizations. Fuel autonomy is up to 60 days.

For reference:

In pursuance of the order of the President of the Russian Federation dated December 2, 2011, the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport (Rosmorrechflot), FSUE "Rosmorport" and JSC "United Shipbuilding Corporation" signed a state contract for the construction of the icebreaker of 22600 project.

This is the only project in the world of an innovative diesel-electric icebreaker of a new generation, that was built in Russia and abroad, which has a high capacity (25 MW on screws), high Icebreaker8 ice class, and the highest degree of automation. The Viktor Chernomyrdin became the largest diesel-electric icebreaker designed by Russian designers and built at the domestic shipyard in the XXI century. Vessels of this class and capacity, such as The Yermak, The Krasin and other icebreakers, were built for the USSR in Finland. The last vessel of the same class was built in 1975.

The JSC "United Shipbuilding Corporation" chose JSC "Baltiysky Zavod" as the construction site, where the keel of the vessel was laid down on October 10, 2012. In accordance with the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 1522, the new icebreaker was named after Viktor Chernomyrdin, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation (1993-1998). The vessel's hull was launched on December 30, 2016. In order to increase the pace of work and taking into account the load of JSC "Baltiysky Zavod", it was decided to change the technological scheme for the construction of the vessel and continue to build the icebreaker at JSC "Admiralty Shipyards" from September 2017. Thanks to the efforts and competencies of the shipbuilders, the project was successfully completed, and on October 22, 2019, the running tests which started on October 5 were successfully completed. On September 30, 2020, JSC "United Shipbuilding Corporation" and FSUE "Rosmorport" signed an act of transfer of the icebreaker.
