FSUE “Rosmorport” conducts repair recovery works on Sakhalin – Mainland ferry service crossing

The Vanino-Kholmsk ferry crossing service linking Sakhalin Island and the mainland is the key transport corridor for the island.

In 2016 coastal facilities of the ferry service, including linkspans, were placed under economic management of FSUE “Rosmorport” by Sakhalin Shipping Company, JSC.

The ferry service in the port of Kholmsk was built in 1973. Today it needs urgent repair recovery works to ensure its safety and accident-free operation.

Under project designs, certain repair works require the removal of loads from a linkspan. Due to this factor the operation of the ferry crossing is planned to be briefly suspended.

FSUE “Rosmorport” worked out proposals enabling to conduct these works as soon as possible without disrupting vital cargo supplies to the island of Sakhalin. The interruption has been coordinated with an operator of the ferry crossing, cargo shippers, Russian Railways, JSC and the government of the Sakhalin region.

The works are planned to be carried out on October 13-28, 2018. They will be conducted round-the-clock in three shifts of specialists of sub-contracting organizations. At present, FSUE “Rosmorport” takes preparatory measures. The facility has all necessary resources.

It should be noted that from 2019 a comprehensive gradual reconstruction is planned to be held on the first and second stages of the Vanino-Kholmsk ferry service in the seaport of Kholmsk. The completion of the reconstruction is synchronized with the operation of two new ferries. Now they are being built at the Amur shipyard by order of the State Transport Leasing Company, PJSC.
