Vanino-Kholmsk ferry complex resumes service

A ferry complex of the crossing between Sakhalin and the mainland resumed its service on October 29, 2018.

It was possible due to the repair-recovery operations carried out by FSUE “Rosmorport” on the linkspan of the Vanino-Kholmsk ferry complex in the seaport of Kholmsk.

Due to the project designs the part of repair operations required the removal of load from the facility due to which the service of the ferry complex has been shortly suspended.

The operations have been organized and carried out on a 24-hour basis in three shifts of specialists of contracting and project organizations that made it possible to minimize the repair time. FSUE “Rosmorport” specialists worked out technical solutions, which helped organize unscheduled handling of eight ferries (including with railway trains) while carrying out repair recovery operations.

Further repair works of the linkspan will be conducted without suspending the movement of ferries and without restrictions on the types of rolling cargoes. The repair works are scheduled to be completed in December 2018.

The Vanino-Kholmsk ferry service is the major transport hub for Sakhalin linking the island with the mainland. Due to the significance of the facility the Sakhalin Region Ministry of Transport and Road Construction controls and coordinates these operations.

The ferry complex was built in 1973. Today it needs urgent repair and recovery works to make its operation safe and sound.

In 2016 the Sakhalin Shipping Company, JSC placed coastal facilities of the ferry complex, which involves linkspans, under economic management of FSUE “Rosmorport”.

It is also necessary to note that commencing from 2019 the gradual overall reconstruction of the first and second stages of the Vanino-Kholmsk ferry service is due to be held in the seaport of Kholmsk. The end of the reconstruction has been synchronized with putting into operation two new ferries. The ferries are now under construction at the Amur shipyard by order of the State Transport Leasing Company, PJSC.
