Project for constructing a seaport near the settlement of Sabetta on Yamal Peninsula awarded with the “Formula of Movement” prize

A project for constructing a seaport near the settlement of Sabetta on the Yamal Peninsula that is implemented by FSUE “Rosmorport” and Yamal LNG, JSC has been recognized as “the best solution in the field of logistics” within the “Formula of Movement 2018” award ceremony.

The award ceremony was held in Moscow on November 22, 2018 within the major exhibition and forum “Transport of Russia 2018”.

The construction of the seaport started in 2012 in the area of the settlement of Sabetta on Yamal Peninsula. The unique operations were carried out from scratch in the Arctic climate zone.

FSUE “Rosmorport” built facilities of federal property, i.e. marine and approach channels, water area of the port, ice protection structures, navigation safety systems, aids to navigation, administrative and technical buildings.

Dredging operations could be carried out only for the brief period of summer navigation. For six navigation periods about 70 million cubic meters of soil have been excavated. Such considerable volume of works for such short period of time has never been done in any Russian seaport. Thus, a marine channel of 49 km in length, an approach channel of six kilometers in length and the water area of the port with an area of 138 ha have been formed up in the settlement of Sabetta. The achieved depths allow 300-meter-long gas tankers of the Christophe de Margerie type to call at the port all-year-round.

The Northwestern and Southeastern ice protection structures protect the seaport’s water area from ice and waves. Ice load accommodation is up to 220 tons per one square meter. Russian leading research institutes conducted researches and modelling of different variants for building ice protection structures in the ice basin. There are no such structures in the world.

The root part of the Southeastern ice protection structure and an artificial plot of land inside it with an area of 14.75 ha were constructed in 2016. In March 2018 the deep water part of the Southeastern and Northeastern ice protection structures were built.

At present, under the project Sabetta FSUE “Rosmorport” ends the construction of an administrative building of the seaport, VTS and GMDSS with coastal radio stations of A1 Sea Area and A2 Sea Area and NAVTEX service stations, as well as other buildings in the administrative zone of the seaport. The GLONASS/GPS control correction station and VTS Sabetta are under operational testing.

The priority of the project is to create an alternative navigable route directly from the South Tambey gas field with an exit to the Northern Sea Route for liquefied natural gas shipment to European and Asian trade partners.

The implementation of the project will make it possible to increase liquefied natural gas production in Russia by 16.5 million tons per year.

By 2018 the nominal output of the seaport is as follows: LNG unloading is 16.5 million tons per year, gas condensate unloading is 1.35 million tons per year.

The “Formula of Movement” contest was founded by Russia’s Transport Ministry Public Council in 2014. It was designed for contributing to the development of the transport infrastructure and stimulating state and commercial structures to resolve significant issues in the transport sphere.

Totally, in 2018 at least 50 applications were submitted to professional judges of the contest.
