Khersones sailing ship marks the 30th anniversary

The celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of the Khersones sailing ship were held in the seaport of Sevastopol on April 6, 2019.

The celebrations involved members of the Sevastopol Government, representatives of FSUE “Rosmorport”, maritime educational institutions, as well as veterans of the fleet and the industry.

Cadets of the industry’s higher educational establishments have taken part in a solemn parade devoted to the jubilee. Young sailors have to undergo two-month-long training on the legendary frigate in the Black Sea. In his greetings message the captain of the sailing ship, Alexander Onishchenko, said a total of 107 cadets of Novorossiysk, Ufa, Rostov-on-Don, Sevastopol and Kerch will get new skills and study the discipline. Cadets could study all ins and outs of the frigate’s rigging. But the priority is to cultivate love of Motherland, the flag and the fleet.

The frigate’s former captain, Mikhail Sukhina, was among honorable guests. Under his management the Khersones sailing ship was put on the map in 1997 when the ship rounded Cape Horn powered off under the sails. In his speech Mikhail Sukhina said, “The Khersones is not just a workplace, but a lifestyle”.

In celebration of the jubilee the crew was awarded letters of gratitude and memorial gifts.

This holiday every interested person can visit the legendary frigate, join the sailing ship and stand abaft the wheel. The performances of the ensemble of the fleet’s veterans “The Marine Soul” and city dance groups became the decoration of the holiday. The residents and guests of the city were able to take part in master classes to bend sailors’ knots and the tug of war games with trainees and crewmembers.

Many voyages lie before the Khersones sailing ship. It waits for the sea and wind energy, storms, multiple all hands jobs and the teamwork.

The Khersones sailing ship designed by famous Polish specialist Sigmund Horen was built at the Gdansk Shipyard in 1989. The sailing ship was named after the ancient city where Prince Vladimir had been baptized.

The frigate is built by the original of sailing ships of the beginning of the XX century and equipped with the full rigging of “ship” sort. Twenty-six sails are handled in hand and run services of the ship. Two engines are in service for navigation in storms and for entering and leaving a port.

In 1997 the sailing ship was put on the map when the ship rounded Cape Horn under the sails when powered off. In 2003 the Khersones rounded the Cape of Good Hope under the sails that sailors considered top class.

In 2015 the ship was placed under FSUE “Rosmorport” economic management. Ten years later the standby at the Zvyozdochka Shipyard the sailing ship was reconstructed. A solemn ceremony of hoisting the sails was held on the Grafskaya harbor in Sevastopol August 12, 2016.

Since August 2016 the Khersones sailing ship has annually taken cadets of naval educational institutions on its board to undergo training in specialties of marine navigation, the operation of ship power plants and ship power equipment, and automatic means. Children also study the ship’s rigging and get skills under the sails, and study to work in team.

The Khersones sailing ship permanently takes part in city holidays and festivals held in the Black Sea ports. During the festivities, the ship warmly opens its board for those who wish and organizes excursions. The frigate’s crew get acquainted thousands of guests with the sailing ship’s construction and lifestyle aboard the one of the most beautiful ships.
