Cadets of the Nadezhda sailing ship pay tribute to the memory of participants in the Battle of Tsushima

The FSUE “Rosmorport” Nadezhda sailing ship are headed for Nagasaki to take part in an international festival, The Nagasaki Tall Ships Festival, April 18-22. A total of 119 cadets of Nevelskoy Maritime State University undergo training aboard the frigate. Among them are future ship drivers, ship engineers and electrical officers. Young sailors sharpen their theoretical skills and perform skills aboard the vessel. Upon completion of the voyage students will get navigation census for further work in the profession. However, the training aboard the FSUE “Rosmorport” sailing ship is aimed at getting practical skills in the field of maritime affairs and bring up team spirit, patriotism and the respect to the fleet traditions.

The frigate’s route includes the passage on the Sea of Japan near the historic Battle of Tsushima. Earlier in the morning of May 14, 1905 the 2nd Pacific Ocean squadron led by Rear Admiral Rozhdenstvensky moved into action with the Japanese fleet in a strait between Korea and Japan. The losing fight ended by a tragic death of the Russian squadron. The major sea battle of that epoch was the key event, which predetermined the outcome of the Russian-Japanese war.

A solemn parade of cadets and crewmembers has been held in memory of Russian sailors aboard the sailing ship. Addressing crew members, the captain of the ship, Sergei Vorobyov, said: “The main thing is that the world keeps in memory courage, mass heroism and bravery of our sailors, who preferred death to surrender”. The participants in the ceremony paid tribute to the memory of dead sailors by observing a minute of silence and floated a wreath.
