FSUE “Rosmorport” starts repair dredging operations on the Donetsky shoal

FSUE “Rosmorport” started repair dredging operations on the Donetsky shoal of the Don River on October 10, 2019.

Dredging operations on this section are carried out by the Azov Basin Branch for the first time. The operations will be carried out pursuant to project documentation “Performance of Works for Restoring Navigation Depths on the Don River on the Donetsky shoal for the Period of 10 Years”. Project documentation has received positive findings by the State Environmental Review.

Repair dredging operations are carried out by the enterprise’s fleet. The dredging convoy consisted of the Kuban-2 multi-bucket dredger, three dredger pontoons and two anchor handlers. Till November 30 up to 60,000 cubic meters of bottom soil is planning to be excavated.

As a result of repair dredging operations the depths at the section of the Donetsky shoal will be brought to 4 meters that ensure navigation safety and will facilitate stable cargo turnover of the seaports of Rostov-on-Don and Azov.

The restoration of the depths on the Donetsky shoal is the first stage of the work aimed at reducing the number of sections limiting navigation in the seaports of Rostov-on-Don and Azov. The results of a research work “The Justification for the Parameters of Navigable Section of the Don River” will be taken as a basis for further work. The Azov Basin Branch will annually maintain navigation depths in the seaports of Rostov-on-Don and Azov. Over the nine months a total of 39,137.2 cubic meters of soil (navigation parameters up to four meters) have been excavated during the dredging operations on the Azov-Don seaway canal. The dredging operations on the Taganrog approach canal will amount to 876,272.6 cubic meters (navigation parameters up to five meters).
