FSUE “Rosmorport” takes part in unique project for Arctic exploration

An international Arctic expedition, MOSAiC (the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate), started on September 20, 2019 upon completion of the five-year-long preparations. The expedition is aimed at thoroughly studying one of the underexplored parts of our planet – the Arctic region – and its impact on the global climate.

A delegation of FSUE “Rosmorport” led by Deputy General Director for Fleet Vasily Strugov attended a solemn opening ceremony in Tromso (Norway).

This is not incidental that FSUE “Rosmorport” takes part in the event. Russia’s contribution plays a key role among 19 countries involved in implementing the large-scale project. FSUE “Rosmorport” is an official partner of MOSAiC. The Captain Dranitsyn icebreaker will take part in the unique expedition. It will deliver food and fuel for replenishment, scientific and hull equipment, relief crew and research staff of the vessel.

Germany’s vessel Polarstern will leave harbor of Norway’s Tromso to move to Eastern Siberia where it will be frozen in the ice pack. Surrounded by ices the vessel will pass a transpolar driftway on the route with the distance of 2.500 kilometers. First the expedition will move to the North Pole and then in September 2020 it is planned to end in the Fram Strait located between Greenland and Spitzbergen.
