Viktor Chernomyrdin icebreaker successfully ends sea trials

One of the powerful diesel electric icebreakers, the Viktor Chernomyrdin, which is under construction by order of FSUE “Rosmorport”, completed the marine stage of builders’ sea trials on October 22, 2019 and returned to a berth of Admiralty Shipyards JSC.

For 17 days the trials of main propulsion machinery, a propulsion unit, the automation and control system, cargo cranes, tug and rescue equipment, and communication and navigation systems have been conducted. The out-duty mode of work has been checked: crewmembers have been suspended from duty for 24 hours. The icebreaker has been handled only from the navigation bridge. During the trials of all the elements of the ship’s helicopter complex day and night flights and a helicopter’s landing on the icebreaker’s end and its stem have been performed.

Representatives of the customer, crewmembers and trial crews noted high maneuverability of the Viktor Chernomyrdin icebreaker and its excellent handling in all modes. The trials confirmed specified data of the vessel and separate types of equipment and systems.

The shipyard has to check the operation of all systems and equipment of the vessel, as well as carry out cleaning operations of indoor premises. The icebreaker is planned to be handed over in December 2019 and ice trials will be held in the Arctic seas in April 2020 amidst the necessary thickness and strength of the ice field.

The Viktor Chernomyrdin icebreaker is one of the most powerful diesel electric icebreakers of the Icebreaker8 ice class. The vessel with the displacement of 22.3 thousand tons is capable of overpassing the ice of two meters in thickness in an uninterrupted way and ramming the ice of up to three meters. During the trials, the icebreaker reached the maximal speed of 18 nautical knots. The icebreaker is equipped with the hull air-bubbling system to prevent the formation of snow and ice crust. The crew includes 38 members. The endurance is 61 days.

The icebreaker is designed for icebreaker support and tugging of vessels. It is capable of transporting and supplying scientific expeditions in the Arctic and the Antarctic and carry up to 90 special personnel in addition to crewmembers. There are special premises to deploy equipment of research laboratories. The icebreaker can carry out the functions of a fire-fight vessel.
