FSUE “Rosmorport” builds new icebreaker of 18 MWth in capacity

FSUE “Rosmorport” and Pella, JSC have signed a state contract to build an Icebreaker7 icebreaker of 18 MWth in capacity upon the results of an opened context in a digital format. The linear diesel electric icebreaker of 21900M2 Project will be built in compliance with a comprehensive plan for modernizing and expanding the trunk infrastructure for the period to 2024 in order to ensure the all-year activity of the Far Eastern freezing seaports. Under the contract, the operations will amount to 7.54 billion Rubles that will be funded from the federal budget. The vessel is planning to be put into operation in 2024.

In 2012-2016 under order of FSUE “Rosmorport” three modern linear diesel electric icebreakers – the Vladivostok, the Murmansk and the Novorossyisk of 21900M Project and 18 MWth in capacity have been built at the Vyborg shipyard. The icebreakers showed themselves to advantage across a variety of scenarios, including in the Arctic seas, and proved their high effectiveness and reliability. During the nature ice trials, the icebreakers reached high figures, including related to icebreaking capability, that exceed the specified rates. This helped us update the 21900M project.

The new icebreaker of 21900M Project is planning to be built based on the 21900M Project and an initial design worked out by Vympel Design Bureau, JSC at the FSUE “Rosmorport” own expense in light of up-to-date international conventional requirements, including to reduce hazardous effluents of ship engines. The ice class of the vessel will increase to the level of Icebreaker7.
