Nadezhda Sailing Ship Returns Home

On August 1, 2017 the Nadezhda sailing ship moored in the seaport of Vladivostok.

The solemn welcome ceremony involved the management of the FSUE “Rosmorport” Far Eastern Basin Branch, representatives of Vladivostok City Administration, the administration of the Vladivostok seaport, Maritime State University named after admiral G.I. Nevelskiy, as well as representatives of the branch community.

Upon arrival at the seaport the dress parade took place, and the captain of the sailing ship, Sergei Vorobyov, reported on the regular completion of the training voyage to the director of the FSUE “Rosmorport” Far Eastern Basin Branch Nina Osipova.

The ship left the port of registry over one year ago when it set on a journey in June 2016. After taking part in the Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2016 and mooring in Kaliningrad for repairs the ship left home to Vladivostok.

During this period, the ship covered thousands of nautical miles and visited seaports of different countries.

The Nadezhda made almost all voyages under the sails. Cadets of maritime education institutions undergoing navigational practice aboard the vessel helped the crew navigate the ship. During the navigation, the cadets acquired necessary primary skills to work in the fleet and mastered the art of sailing navigation.

While in the Mediterranean Sea cadets passed the GTO norms aboard the sailing ship. The ship's size helped carry out the majority of necessary tests aboard the ship. Under the instruction of honored sport master, Olympic silver bob-sleigh medalist, current GTO Ambassador Aleksei Seliverstov the students reached major qualifying standards, including running and swimming.

On the way back from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok the Nadezhda covered the distance of 13 750 miles and called at the seaports of Baltiysk, Valetta (Malta), Port Said (Egypt) and Singapore (Singapore). The sailing ship also made two friendly visits to the seaports of Colombo (Sri Lanka) and Hai Phong (Vietnam) where an open board had been organized for all comers. Visits to foreign seaports allows the ship to promote maritime history and Russian maritime education.

During the voyage, the sailing ship celebrated a remarkable event – the 25th anniversary of hoisting the State Flag of the Russian Federation aboard the vessel. This date marked the beginning for carrying out the important mission to preserve the spirit of sailing navigation. Over the years the sailing ship took part in more than 20 large-scale marine research expeditions jointly with leading domestic and foreign scientific organizations.
