Khersones Sailing Ship Celebrates 28th Anniversary

On April 2, 2017 the legendary Khersones sailing ship celebrated its 28th anniversary. In order to celebrate this day residents and guests of Sevastopol took part in the Day of Open Ladder. Visitors had an opportunity to have a look at the structure of the training sailing ship, its history, emotive power and daily life.

The FSUE “Rosmorport” Sevastopol Branch acted as one of the organizers of the festivities.

The festivities involved Sevastopol Deputy Governor Yuri Krivov, representatives of Russia's Black Sea Fleet headquarters, different public and patriotic organizations.

The festive events, such as tug-of-war competitions and master classes were held on this day. Guests enjoyed the performance of the children and fleet groups.

One of the founders of the Maritime Photo Collection Works, A. Alyakrinsky, presented his new work aboard the sailing ship. A photo picture showing the Khersones sailing boat was solemnly given to the city of Sevastopol.

In his turn, vice governor Yury Krivov presented a model of the future sail depicting the emblem of Sevastopol to the vessel crew. The sail will be placed on the sailing ship's foremast.

The opening of the “Under the Sails of Khersones” exhibition was one of the surprises. The collection of pictures created by famous Sevastopol painter Oleg Tantsyura was presented at the exhibition. The painter created his pictures aboard the ship during the Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta in 2016.

On the ship's anniversary over 100 cadets graduated from the Nakhimov Naval Academy started their first training. Khersones sailing ship will become the first training vessel for young sailors. The sailing ship will leave for training navigation as early as April. Cadets will be able to feel like real navigators. They will learn to make knots and handle sails. Twenty six sails are handled manually and ensure main movement of the ship. It's under these sails that the frigate doubled Cape Horn in 1997.

For reference:

Khersones three-mast sailing frigate was laid down at the Gdansk shipyard (Poland) in 1987 and was launched in 1989. The ship was built as a prototype of sailing ships of the beginning of the XX century. Khersones is a fully-rigged ship.

The commissioned vessel managed by the Black Sea squad of training vessels performed training international voyages with cadets aboard. Since 2006 the ship has been laid-up with the reduction of the crew.

Khersones sailing ship is the unique vessel, which in 1997 doubled Cape Horn with the engine turned off. Cape Horn is considered ominous even among sailors.

In 2003 Khersones doubled the Cape of Good Hope under sail, which is considered top performance amongst sailors.

After 10 years of standing time reconstructive maintenance has been performed at the Zvyozdochka shipyard. On August 12, 2016 a solemn ceremony was held in the Grafskaya quay of Sevastopol to hoist the sails on the renovated Khersones frigate.

In September the renovated sailing ship joined two other FSUE “Rosmorport” frigates, Mir and Nadezhda, and took part in one of the phases of the Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta in 2016.
