Novorossiysk Icebreaker Takes Part in the Arctic Forum “The Arctic Region – Territory of Dialogue”

On March 29, 2017 the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Maxim Sokolov and Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation – the Head of the Federal Marine and River Transport Agency Victor Olersky attended a new diesel-electric icebreaker Novorossiysk.

The ship has become a part of the exposition of the Arctic Forum “The Arctic Region – Territory of Dialogue” that is taking place in Arkhangelsk at the present time.

Government agencies' directors had an appointment with the icebreaker's captain and the crew. They inspected the shipboard and technical area. Also, photo works of the FSUE “Rosmorport” employees illustrating special aspects of life on the icebreaker and specifics of work in the high latitudes were presented for the guests in the main cabin.

FSUE “Rosmorport” General Director Andrey Tarasenko reported to the field directors about the intermediate results of the icebreaker support in winter navigation 2016-2017 during which Novorossiysk escorted more than fifty vessels in the White Sea. Besides, in February this year the icebreaker has conducted its first Arctic voyage delivering 160 tons of general cargo to the Frantz Josef Land Archipelago.

A diesel-electric icebreaker “Novorossiysk” is one of the three diesel-electric open sea icebreakers that were built as part of the Federal Target Program “Development of the Russian Transport System (2010–2020)” in 2016. The vessel was constructed with the use of the advanced technologies and can pass ice with thickness of up to 1,5 m.

The icebreaker is designed for escorting large-capacity vessels, towing, providing support to the vessels suffering distress, and for transferring of cargo.
