FSUE “Rosmorport” General Director Inspected Process of Khersones Sailing Ship Repair

After long repair of Khersones sailing training ship, a ceremonial flag rising will be held on August 12, 2016.

On the eve of the event the FSUE “Rosmorport” General Director Andrey Tarasenko inspected vessel repairing completion process.

During the visit that was held on August 4 to 6, 2016, the head of the enterprise greeted the ship crew, cadets of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution “Moscow State Academy of  Water Transport” and the Sevastopol Branch of Ushakov State Maritime University, which are currently passing practice on Khersones.

For the past 10 years the vessel has not went to the sea and was virtually crumbling. The vessel’s technical condition seemed poor: almost all the systems were in unsuitable condition.

From November, 2015 repairing works are conducted on the sailing ship, during which fault detection of  vessel’ systems and mechanisms, dock repair, replacement of deck flooring, repair of electrical equipment, mast and yard, surface and underwater parts of the body, painting have already been completed. Also new modern cooking equipment, a set of new sails have been purchased, outdated navigation equipment have been replaced.

Khersones Sailing Training Ship was laid in Gdansk shipyard (Poland) in 1987, in 1989 it was launched.  The frigate is built according to the prototype of sailing ships of the early XX century and has a complete sail rigging of the “ship” type. 26 sails are controlled only by hand and provide the main vessel’s movement.

Today, the vessel is the only sailing ship in the world to have reached Cape Horn under sail in 1997.
