Khersones Sailing Ship Takes Part in the Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta

On July 29, 2016 FSUE “Rosmorport” submitted an application for participation of Khersones Sailing Training Ship (STS) in SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2016.

The sailing ship will take part in Russian stage of races between Novorossiysk and Sochi. So, all three FSUE “Rosmorport” sailing training ships – Mir, Nadezhda and Khersones – will take part in the Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta.

Currently, reconstructive maintenance of Khersones STS is being completed. On Monday, August 1, vessel will receive the first group of cadets (70 people) from FSBEI HE “Moscow State Academy of Water Transport”, which will pass navigational practice of the sailing ship.

Three-masted Khersones Sailing frigate was laid in Gdansk shipyard (Poland) in 1987, in 1989 it was launched.  The frigate was built according to the prototype of sailing ships of the early XX century and has a complete sail rigging of the “ship” type. 26 sails are controlled only by hand and provide the main vessel’s movement.

The Sailing ship is the only vessel in the world, which in 1997 under the sails and the engine turned off rounded Cape Horn, which is still considered dangerous for navigation of vessels.
