FSUE “Rosmorport” Icebreakers Pass Ice Trials In The Kara Sea

On April 25, 2016 two FSUE “Rosmorport” icebreakers Vladivostok and Murmansk passed ice trials in the Kara sea and arrived in the seaport of Murmansk.

The trials were held in accordance with the planned program. The icebreakers proved the project class and specification requirements. During the trials Vladivostok and Murmansk icebreakers covered over 2.5 thousand nautical miles, having tested their ice passability, engine and equipment operation in navigation conditions.

According to the testing program, when determining the index of ice passability of an icebreaker, its speed, propeller shaft rotation speed, propulsive output consumed in motion, and thickness of the surmounted ice are measured. One of the important points is conducting icebreaker motion mode tests in the same ice field at different levels of power consumption.

Icebreakers of 21900M project are double-decked vessels of unlimited navigation area with two orbit-roll type rudder propellers in the stern and a thruster in the bow, equipped with a helicopter pad on the foredeck.

This are multifunctional vessels of new generation with the highest degree of automation and unlimited navigation area, able to overcome ice up to 1.5 m thick.

The icebreakers are designed for independent escort of large vessels, towing, assistance to vessels in distress, as well as for transportation of goods. Each vessel has a deck for placing containers and crane with capacity of 26 tonnes.

The vessels have fuel reserve sufficient for autonomous operation during 40 days.

The new diesel-powered icebreakers are expected to be used in the Baltic Sea and on the Arctic routes.

Replenishment of the icebreaker fleet due to the construction of new vessels is a priority for ensuring a year-round operation of the freezing Russian seaports, as well as for ensuring safety of navigation, conduction of effective cargo operations and environmental safety.
