FSUE “Rosmorport” Employees Pay Their Respects to Vessels and Sailors – Victims of the Great Patriotic War

On the threshold of the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941 – 1945 representatives of maritime transport departments and organizations gathered in Moryak (“Sailor”) resort in the Mozhaysky District,  the Moscow Region, to honor the memory of the sailors who fought in the war.

The ceremony of laying wreaths and flowers to the monument of the sailors and vessels, victims of the Great Patriotic War, was opened by Deputy Minister of Transport of Russia Viktor Olersky, Head of Rosmorrechflot Alexander Davydenko and chairman of the Council of Veterans of marine and river fleet organization Yuri Mikhailov. The principal figures of the event – war veterans and home front workers – were invited to the resort for the ceremonial laying of wreaths and flowers.

After the honored guests and veterans had laid wreaths and flowers to the memorial, they were invited to a remembrance rally where the Great Patriotic War participants were congratulated on the approaching holiday and said the worlds of gratitude.

Moryak resort has not been accidentally chosen to host this event. For 29 years in this picturesque place the pioneer flotilla, created at the initiative and with the direct participation of the Hero of the Soviet Union and the first polar explorer Ivan Papanin, was mooring for a three-month period. Every year the pioneer flotilla held meetings, the first of which took place in 1966. Each unit of the flotilla was called a crew. The names were given after a particular vessel. Vessels' crews, in their turn, took patronage over the young sailors.

Annually the camp held a march devoted to the memory of the soldiers  – victims of the Great Patriotic War. On 22 June 1965, the Memorial Day, pioneers of the flotilla installed temporary obelisks made of plywood in four villages located within a radius of 5 km in memory of the died villagers. These villages are Petrovo, Burtsevo, Shelomovo and Shishimorovo. After a few years young villagers, with the help of experienced bricklayers, set brick obelisks with marble tops instead of the temporary ones. In the Shishimorovo village such obelisk was set with the help of the Young Communist Leaguers of the Ministry of Marine Fleet.

Later on the site of the flotilla Moryak resort was opened.
