Mir Sailing Ship Preparing For New Stage Of Race

On July 19, 2017 the Mir training sailing ship arrived at the seaport of Turku (Finland). It will stay there till July 23.

Ten cadets of St Petersburg City Palace of Youth Creativity are completing their training in the Finnish seaport. The journey provided them an opportunity to get primary naval skills and study the art of sailing navigation. During the stay aboard the ship, young sailors studied the particularities of navigation in open sea under the sails, took part in maritime holidays in the cities of the ports of call. Young cadets were given certificates on undergoing navigational practice and souvenirs.

The sailing ship takes part in an international regatta in the Baltic Sea, The Tall Ships Races 2017.

The second stage of the race will start in the seaport of Turku on July 23 and end in the seaport of Klaipeda (Lithuania) on July 29. During the regatta, cadets of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping will help the Mir defend the title of one of the oldest sailing ships. The cadets will continue their training on the ship.

By honorably carrying out the functions of a hallmark of the Russian maritime capital – St Petersburg, the Mir actively visits Russian and foreign seaports highlighting marine-based culture and maritime education of Russia. The training ship, which will mark the 30th anniversary upon hoisting the state colors in December 2017, strengthens its glory every year as one of the fastest and well-handled big sailing ships in the world. The collection of the vessel museum is regularly expanded by prizes of the most prestigious sea and ocean regattas.
