Icebreakers Admiral Makarov and Kapitan Dranitsyn Continue Their Work in Chukotka

In the East Siberian Sea in the area of Bay of Chaun icebreakers Admiral Makarov and Kapitan Dranitsyn of the FSUE “Rosmorport” continue ice observation for ascertaining the capability of the exit of bulk-carriers through consolidated ice band, blocking the way for vessels.

On January 19, in accordance with the plan of the pilotage on the East to the ice tip and exit of vessels on clean water icebreakers Admiral Makarov and Kapitan Dranitsyn performed reconnaissance of ice conditions in the vicinity of Shelagskiy Cape. In this section the passage northwards to the area of slighter ice is blocked.

On January 20, considering the actual hydro-meteorological conditions, as well as relevant information received from captains of the icebreakers and data of the satellite images, it was decided to continue the work on study of ice conditions westwards, at the outlet of the Chaun Bay. The main objective is to find a passage in the bridge of consolidated ice, through which it would be possible to ensure exit of vessels for their subsequent escort to the east.

To collect the maximum possible amount of ice observation on navigation area FSUE “Rosmorport” almost daily plans to conduct air reconnaissance. However, at the present time, the involvement of helicopter is not yet possible due to adverse weather conditions.
