Admiral Makarov and Kapitan Dranitsyn Icebreakers Preparing to Provide Support for Dry Cargo Ships on Northern Sea Route

On January 13, 2017, on Chukotka, unloading of general cargo for construction of pier of “Akademik Lomonosov” floating nuclear thermal power plant (FNTPP) was completed.

Cargoes were delivered to the Pevek seaport on January 7 aboard the Iogann Makhmastal and Sinegorsk dry cargo ships. The Admiral Makarov and Kapitan Dranitsyn icebreakers escorted vessels to the northernmost seaport of Russia.

At present, there is a difficult situation observed in the area of Ayon Island and Cape Shelag in the East Siberian Sea: ice nip and ridges are higher than 2.5 m.

The ship convoy has stopped its movement because of the difficult ice situation that prevents providing support and making for the open sea. However, this situation is not extraordinary. Meteorologists forecast that the weather conditions will improve on January 19. Then an additional assessment on further sea passage will be made.

Under the current circumstances, nothing threatens the crews' life. Ships are provided with fuel and all necessary resources.

The “Akademik Lomonosov” FNTPP is the unique floating nuclear power plant that makes it possible to effectively resolve problems of energy resources supplying to remote areas.

In order to make construction materials supply regular, navigation was for the first time opened in January. This has become a serious challenge for specialists. As a rule, navigation in Pevek is closed in November.
