Icebreakers of FSUE “Rosmorport” return to the ports of their registration after the icebreaker assistance season on the Northern Sea Route

Four vessels of the enterprise, namely Vladivostok, Viktor Chernomyrdin, Krasin, and Murmansk, successfully completed their operations on the Northern Sea Route and returned to the ports of their registration. Under a contract with FSUE “Atomflot”, they conducted a total of 192 icebreaker operations during the 2024-2025 winter navigation period.

All vessels carried out ice assistance operations in the western part of the Northern Sea Route, within the waters of the Kara Sea. They created and maintained ice channels, stood by in anticipation of vessels' arrivals, and facilitated convoys.

During the past season, the icebreaker Krasin of the FSUE “Rosmorport” Arctic Basin Branch operated on the Northern Sea Route for more than six months, completing 68 operations. After finishing its duty on June 30, the vessel returned to the seaport of registration in Murmansk.

The icebreaker provided assistance for bulk carriers and tankers from the western edge of the ice in the Kara Sea and adjacent areas of the Barents Sea to the Yenisei Bay and back, towards Murmansk and Arkhangelsk. The largest convoy led by Krasin consisted of four vessels.

Additionally, the icebreaker cleared 400 square miles of ice in the area of Sever Bay to enable the independent passage of vessels into the Yenisei River, where the seaport of Dudinka is located upstream.

Three more icebreakers from FSUE “Rosmorport”, namely Vladivostok, Viktor Chernomyrdin, and Murmansk, worked in Yenisei Bay and on the Yenisei River, as well as in Sever Bay. There is a significant shipping activity in the water area of the bay due to oil transshipment at a terminal serving the Payakha group of fields in northern part of the Krasnoyarsk Region.

The icebreaker Murmansk began its duty in late October, carrying out operations in the Kara Sea until April, being replaced by icebreaker Vladivostok. The flagship of FSUE “Rosmorport” fleet, the world's most powerful non-nuclear icebreaker Viktor Chernomyrdin, joined the group of vessels in February and returned to the seaport Big Port of St. Petersburg on June 27. Together, they conducted a total of 124 icebreaker operations.

The work of the enterprise's icebreakers was recognized by the Marine Operations Headquarters (MOH) of Federal State Budgetary Institution “GlavSevmorput” (part of the State Corporation “Rosatom”). Vladimir Arutyunyan, First Deputy General Director – Head of MOH, specifically thanked Alexander Trukhanovich, captain of the icebreaker Viktor Chernomyrdin, for the successful mooring of vessels at the ice pier and their departure.

“His skills and high professionalism minimized risks and ensured uninterrupted logistics in Yenisei Bay and in the waters of the Yenisei River,” Vladimir Arutyunyan emphasized. “Moreover, the effective work of the icebreaker in assisting vessels along the marine section of the route confirmed the highest level of preparation and ability to adapt to changing ice conditions.”

He also praised the activities of Yuri Kalganov, captain of the icebreaker Vladivostok, who demonstrated exceptional skills while performing icebreaker operations in Sever Bay which ensured timely delivery of cargoes.

“We would like to express our special gratitude for the safely and efficiently performed operation involving the relocation of the barge Krasnoyarsk within the bay’s waters,” the MOH chief added.

In the previous season, the icebreakers of FSUE “Rosmorport” also operated in the waters of the Kara Sea under a contract with FSUE “Atomflot”. During the winter and spring navigation of 2023-2024, the vessels Krasin, Vladivostok, Admiral Makarov, and Viktor Chernomyrdin performed over 200 icebreaker operations.
