Reviving Glorious Traditions of Russian Shipbuilding: Onezhsky Shipyard Resumes Work with Laying a New Ship

FSUE “Rosmorport” General Director Andrey Tarasenko participated in the solemn opening of OOO Onezhskiy Sudostroyitelny-Sudoremontny Zavod (Onezhsky Shipyard) which took place on 06 June 2015 in Petrozavodsk.

The ceremony was also attended by Plenipotentiary of the President of Russia in the North-Western Federal District Vladimir Bulavin, Secretary of Council for Security of Russia Nikolay Patrushev, Head of Republic of Kareliya Alexandr Khudilaynen, Deputy Minister of Transport of Russia Viktor Olersky, and others.

Onezhsky Shipyard was founded in 2002 on the basis of the ship repairing capacities of the Belomor-Onezhsky shipping company created in 1944. But in 2011 after change of the management production stopped, and the enterprise went bankrupt. In the end of 2014 it was decided to resume activities and assign ownership of the shipyard to the state.

Laying of the ST23WIM workboat with ice strengthening for the FSUE “Rosmorport” Azovo-Chernomorsky Basin Branch marks the restart of the shipyard. This is the first boat of the series, for which a package of orders for 2015 and the first half of 2016 was made for the total sum of 1.2 billion roubles. Within the order three scow dumps, two buoy boats and three pilot boats are to be constructed.

Water transport has always been important for Russia with its wide river system and tremendous sea coast. In this connection shipbuilding industry acquires great significance. Resumption of Onezhsky Shipyard operation is of great strategic and social importance, as new orders allowed to create more than 500 workplaces in the town.
