Ecological Complex in Murmansk Seaport is Being Designed

Design works by order of FSUE “Rosmorport” are being carried in Murmansk Seaport in order to create the ecological complex of the seaport.

The works are part of the project for the complex development of the Murmansk transport network. In the mid-term, the seaport throughput capacity is expected to reach 90 mln tons by 2030, and that will demand extra capacities for reception and treatment of all kinds of shipboard wastes.

Creation of such capacities is first of all conditioned by growing requirements to ecological environment in Murmansk, and the planned establishment of the Polar Code.

The expected location of the ecological complex is near berth No. 20 and in adjacent waters. The total size of designated area is 1.98 hectares.

The ecological complex will receive the following types of waste: bilge waters (337.4 m3 per day), domestic sewage (102.8 m3 per day), oily sludge (101.2 m3 per day), and also domestic waste, including food waste (12 tons per day).

A special bilge water collecting vessel equipped with pipe stations, separate tanks for bilge and domestic waters, and waste tanks will receive bilge and domestic waters.

The complex will comprise the following facilities: an incinerator station for thermal treatment of waste, biological treatment facilities and local rainwater treatment facilities, silt filters for treatment facilities, and a mobile station for oily sludge mechanic dehydratation.

The treated sewage will flow by gravity into the port waters. Ash residual from burned waste and treatment remains will be disposed at special fields for solid domestic waste.

In order to provide yield increase an option of combined ecological and bunkering base is also being reviewed.

Implementation of the project will allow to preserve the unique ecosystem in the waters of Murmansk Seaport and Kola Bay in conditions of the growing environmental footprint.
