The first postage stamp depicting the Khersones sailing boat issued

The stamp dedicated to the legendary Khersones sailing training boat of FSUE “Rosmorport” was put into circulation on March 25, 2022. The stamp depicts the sailboat itself and an artifact of the Tavrida.ART festival where the Khersones sailboat is a permanent participant.

The same day, a ceremony of commemorative cancellation of postage stamps with the image of the boat took place at the Post of Crimea in Sevastopol. Anton Eliseev, Acting Captain of the Khersones sailing boat, took part in it.

On the day of the ceremony, stamps are cancelled with special postmarks that, unlike the regular ones, contain a memorable date in the text - March 25, 2022, to which they are timed.

You can also cancel a stamp with a special postmark on the first day of its release into circulation at the central post offices of Moscow and Sochi.

In addition to the stamp, special first-day envelopes were additionally issued, as well as promotional and souvenir sets of postal products with the image of the Khersones sailing training boat, its brief history and main characteristics.

For reference:

Khersones sailing training boat is one of the three three-masted training frigates of FSUE “Rosmorport”. The vessel was designed by Polish engineer Zygmunt Choren based on the prototype of sailing boats of the early 20th century. The Khersones sailboat gained worldwide reputation after rounding Cape Horn, which is still considered an ominous place among sailors, under sail with the engines turned off. Later, the boat set another record by rounding the Cape of Good Hope - this is also considered top class among sailors.

In 2021, the sailboat was re-equipped from classic white sails to scarlet ones. At the moment, the Khersones is the only sailing boat of such dimensions with scarlet sails.

Every year, more than 400 cadets of the leading maritime educational institutions of Russia undergo navigation practice on the boat. The Khersones sailboat passes more than 8,000 miles annually.

The Khersones was honored to annually open a naval parade in Sevastopol, dedicated to the Russian Navy Day. The sailboat also takes part in significant events in Sevastopol, the Republic of Crimea and the Krasnodar Region.
