Flag of the “ROSMORPORT – 20 years in the right direction!” campaign solemnly raised in the Sea of Japan

The FSUE “Rosmorport” Far Eastern Basin Branch has joined the anniversary campaign “ROSMORPORT - 20 years in the right direction!”, becoming the final element in a row of activities on installing the flag with the anniversary symbols of the enterprise, held by its branches in the Far Eastern Federal District. Branch employees raised the flag on Askold Island in Peter the Great Bay of the Sea of Japan.

On the day of the event, early in the morning, employees of the Far Eastern Basin Branch sailed onboard yacht from the seaport of Vladivostok to the venue of the event – Askold Island: one of the ice-class tugs, built by order of FSUE “Rosmorport” and delivered to Vladivostok in June 2020 to operate in the seaports of the region, was named after it.

Having overcome more than 30 nautical miles in 5 hours, the voyagers disembarked on Askold Island and climbed to an old lighthouse 8.4 meters high, built in 1881 on the rock at the end of Cape Elagina. The national flag of the Russian Federation and the anniversary flag “ROSMORPORT - 20 years in the right direction!” were solemnly raised there.

Askold Island is one of the three largest islands of Peter the Great Bay. The maximum altitude is 358 meters above sea level. Located 50 km away from Vladivostok and resembling a horseshoe mark by shape, the island has always attracted attention of both Russians and residents of foreign countries with its natural riches. The island is mountainous and has three peaks over 300 meters high. It is mostly covered with broad-leaved forests, but the coast near Stupenchatyi, Tumannyi and Palchatyi capes is occupied by meadows and sparse forests. Here one can find Amur velvet, thickets of barberry bushes, Manchurian walnut, wild acacia and specimens of relic red yew tree. The island is inhabited by flocks of migratory birds, and near its rocky shores there are spotted seals - bay seal and Steller's sea lions.

The campaign "ROSMORPORT - 20 years in the right direction!” is aimed at demonstrating the beauty and richness of Russia's tourist routes, as well as showing the high importance of FSUE “Rosmorport” in the development of the maritime industry of the country. Earlier, the events of the campaign were held in the Makhachkala, Arkhangelsk, Sakhalin, Murmansk, Petropavlovsk branches, Azovo-Chernomorsky and North-Eastern basin branches.

For reference:

Askold Island has changed more than one name in its history, and got its current title thanks to the members of the famous expedition of Lieutenant Colonel Vassily Babkin. In 1862-1863, they made a more detailed hydrographic description of Peter the Great Bay and renamed the island after the strait, which in its turn was earlier titled in honor of one of the first Russian screw frigates – “Askold”.
