Pilotage service of the FSUE “Rosmorport” Azovo-Chernomorsky Basin Branch prevents a threat to navigation safety during a hurricane in the seaport of Novorossiysk

The pilotage service of the FSUE “Rosmorport” Azovo-Chernomorsky Basin Branch prevented an emergency situation with the Stavros vessel in conditions of a hurricane wind with gusts reaching 40 meters per second.

There was a breakage of the bow mooring lines (cables fixing the vessel to the mooring structure at anchor) on the Stavros vessel, moored at berth No. 5 of NMTP PJSC in the seaport of Novorossiysk, caused by the north-east wind of hurricane values. With the hydrometeorological conditions of immense complexity, an emergency situation was developing dynamically. If not prevented, it would inevitably lead to damage to the infrastructure of the seaport and the vessel; and there was a real threat to the vessel's crew and the environment.

Following the instructions from the captain of the seaport of Novorossiysk, Grigory Grass, a pilot of the 1st category of the FSUE “Rosmorport” Azovo-Chernomorsky Basin Branch pilotage service, arrived at the berth at the scene of the incident. Having quickly understood the situation, Grigory Yurievich secured the mooring of the vessel with the help of five tugs allocated by NMTP Flot JSC, giving recommendations from the berth. Then the pilot of FSUE “Rosmorport” boarded the ship and, upon agreement with the captain of the seaport of Novorossiysk, decided to urgently withdraw Stavros from the berth and lead the vessel out to the outer estuary of the seaport.

Due to the ongoing storms, the disembarkation of the FSUE “Rosmorport” pilot from the vessel was carried out only four days after the incident. Facilities and the vessel were not damaged, and there was no threat to the safety of people and the environment.

For competent actions in the hydrometeorological conditions of immense complexity, which resulted in preventing the emergency in the seaport of Novorossiysk, the senior management of the enterprise decided to encourage the pilot.
