FSUE “Rosmorport” told about the work of its icebreakers in the Arctic zone at the Forum Arctic: today and the future

FSUE “Rosmorport” took part in the XII International Forum Arctic: today and the future. Vasily Strugov, Deputy General Director for the Company's Fleet, made a presentation at the conference “Test of Strength: shipbuilding and ship repair in the Arctic". How to preserve and realize the potential?”, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Northern Sea Route.

The conference participants discussed issues of Arctic shipbuilding and ship repair under sanctions restrictions, in particular, the prospects for the construction of new shipyards and expansion of existing ones, the problems of supplying foreign equipment and components, the possibilities of state support for the shipbuilding industry, ways to attract investment in this strategically important area for the country, as well as the use of innovations in the construction of a modern civil fleet for the needs of the Arctic.

Vasily Strugov spoke about the ice-class vessels of the enterprise operating in the Arctic during the winter navigation of 2022-2023. Seven icebreakers of the FSUE “Rosmorport” and the tugboat Pomor, built by order of the enterprise at Onego Shipyard, participate in Arctic projects on the basis of concluded contracts.

The Deputy General Director for the Fleet of the FSUE “Rosmorport” recalled that at the moment the project of the production facilities deep modernization is implemented at the Onego Shipyard. Upon completion of the project, the production capacity of the plant for the construction of vessels for the Arctic region will grow almost 4 times, and the shipyard will be able to deliver up to 8 vessels per year.

To date, contracts have been signed for the construction of shallow-draught icebreakers with a capacity of 6 MW for operation in estuarine freezing ports at the new production facilities of the Onego Shipyard. The plant also plans to build high-ice class tugs, LNG bunkering vessels and a technical fleet for dredging, including in the Arctic region.

As part of the Company's activities to upgrade the icebreaker fleet, on November 16, 2022, a solemn ceremony was held at the Vyborg Shipyard to lay the keel of an icebreaker with a capacity of 18 MW of Icebreaker7 ice class, for which the domestic engines will be used.

The XII International Forum Arctic: today and the future is being held in St. Petersburg on December 8-9, 2022. The Forum is organized by the Interregional public organization ”Association of Polar Explorers”. The event is aimed at joining efforts to ensure the sustainable development of the Arctic in a period of global geopolitical and economic changes.
