Cadets shift on the Mir sailing boat

On October 11, 2022, a navigation practice on the Mir sailboat of FSUE “Rosmorport” ended for 117 cadets of the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping.

The navigation practice took place in the Baltic Sea. For 62 days, the cadets obtained knowledge and new skills necessary for work at sea: they studied the structure of the vessel, the basics of watchkeeping, worked on deck and in the engine room, and also took part in preparing and setting sails, as well as rigging activities.

On October 4, the cadets, together with professional athletes, took part in the Marine Marathon – a race that was held on the deck of the Mir sailing boat.

The event, organized by the marine club “Pod Parusami” (eng. Under Sail) with the participation of FSUE “Rosmorport”, Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping and the Amberman sports club, took place offshore the Baltic Sea 50 miles away from the town of Baltiysk, Kaliningrad Region.

11 athletes took part in the competition. Each one could choose a distance according to their strength and experience: seven athletes went to a distance of 10 km, three people went to a half marathon (21.1 km), and one sportsman, the famous marathon runner Dmitry Perekrestov, went to a full marathon (42.2 km).

The length of one lap on the deck of the Mir sailboat is 145 m. The athletes had to run 69 laps for 10 km, 146 laps for a half marathon and 292 laps for a marathon. The runners had to adapt to the deck unevenness and the severe weather events of the autumn Baltic Sea.

From October 12 to October 14, 2022, FSUE “Rosmorport” accepted new batch of students on board the vessel – 110 cadets of the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping and Voronin Arctic Maritime Institute. The cadets will be accompanied by three practice supervisors.

The new practice term will last two months in the Baltic Sea, where cadets will be able to practice previously acquired theoretical skills.
