Measures taken to reduce the time of delivery of goods at the Ust-Luga – Baltiysk line

Currently, the Ambal, Baltiysk and Marshal Rokossovsky sea automobile and railway ferries, operating at the Ust-Luga – Baltiysk line, are almost 100 % loaded. Petroleum products make up from 30 to 50 % of the total volume of cargo transported by the ferries in railway cars.

If necessary, the issue of redirecting petroleum products going to the Kaliningrad region from ferries to tankers can be considered, which will significantly increase the volume of transportation of other types of goods at the ferry line. From September 2022, the ferry fleet's carrying capacity will be increased as the fourth automobile-railway ferry General Chernyakhovsky (the project is similar to the Marshal Rokossovsky vessel) will start working at the line.

As for the rolling machinery, it is possible to book cargo transportation within a two-week period. At the same time, seats for the carriage of railway cars in the period from August to September 2022 are booked in advance, in July of the current year. For applications confirmed by the shippers, the cargo will be reliably rolled onto one of the four vessels.

For the convenience of cargo carriers, the principle of “one window operation” is implemented at the line – railway cars and rolling machinery are distributed to the nearest scheduled ferry, which helps to reduce delivery time and allows to use the ferries transportation capability at maximum.

At the present moment, there is a backup stock of carrying capacity in containers on a ro-ro type URSA MAJOR vessel, since container loading averages about 30 %. The vessel can take an additional 200 loaded 40-foot containers for each voyage, as well as up to 4,000 tons of general cargo in the hold.

If necessary, it is also possible to forward additional cargo from railway and automobile transport to the Bronka terminal or the seaport of Ust-Luga and carry it as general cargo on vessels of the Northern Shipping Company that operate at the St. Petersburg – Kaliningrad line.
