The Viktor Chernomyrdin icebreaker anchored at the roadstead of the Murmansk seaport on May 17 after the successful completion of ice trials in the Arctic, in the eastern part of the Kara Sea.
During the trials, the Viktor Chernomyrdin icebreaker confirmed that it is able to move continuously in a continuous ice field up to 2 m thick, as well as perform icebreaking operations with ice thickness up to 3 m.

The multifunctional innovative vessel left the home seaport of Big Port Saint Petersburg for trials on April 17, 2022. Within a month, the icebreaker crossed 5,372 nautical miles and 5 seas: the Baltic, Northern, Norwegian, Barents and Kara seas.

As part of the expedition, the Viktor Chernomyrdin icebreaker berthed the Sevmorput nuclear-powered lighter carrier in the Yenisei Bay to the ice berth in difficult ice conditions. The total length of the canal was more than 27 nautical miles.

On the way back, the icebreaker passed near the Novaya Zemlya archipelago - such a route was chosen as the optimal one, taking into account the forecast of drifting ice fields and the approaching cyclone front.

Upon leaving the ice fields, the Viktor Chernomyrdin icebreaker successfully completed a maneuvering element - a turn in clear water using azipods.
