Icebreakers of FSUE “Rosmorport” work on ice lowering on Northern Dvina river as part of flood control measures

The Arkhangelsk Branch of FSUE “Rosmorport” began to carry out annual work on ice lowering with the use of Kapitan Chadaev and Kapitan Evdokimov icebreakers in the delta of the Northern Dvina River.

Icebreaking works are carried out every spring in order to prevent flooding on congestive sections of the Severnaya Dvina River in accordance with the recommendations of the Northern UGMS FSBI, taking into account weather and hydrological conditions. Currently, the weather conditions in the icebreaking area are favorable – there are small frosts from -1 to -3 degrees Celsius at night and from +2 to +9 degrees Celsius during the day. Against the background of cold winter weather, ice up to 60-65 cm thickness formed in the channels. Ice concentration in the entire water area is 9-10 points.

Each vessel, as part of the work, passes more than 100 km per day, the total route the vessels pass will be more than 700 km along several branches of the Northern Dvina.

The completion of icebreaking work is planned approximately on April 22-23.

Thanks to preventive flood control measures carried out by icebreakers of the FSUE “Rosmorport”, it is possible to avoid rising water above the marks of marine hazards and damage to property located in flooding-prone territories in the estuary part of the Northern Dvina River.
