The decrease in cargo turnover in seaports of Russia is slowed down due to the continued growth in dry cargo transshipment

In general, the cargo turnover in the seaports of Russia from January till February 2021 decreased by 3.2% compared to the same period of the last year, or to 128.3 million tons. Rate of decline of transshipment in domestic seaports is slowing down. At the same time, transshipment of bulk cargo decreased by 13.3%, or to 67.34 million tons, mostly due to a drop in transshipment of oil (by 17.6%), petroleum products (by 9.1%) and liquefied gas (by 0.4%).

At the same time, the growth of dry cargo transshipment in the seaports of Russia, registed in 2020, continued. In accordance with FSUE “Rosmorport” analytics, this resulting to a gradual reduction in the backlog of the total volume of transshipment of goods in relation to 2020. For example, cargo turnover for dry cargo increased by 10.9% compared to the results of the first two months of 2020, or to 60.96 million tons.

In January-February 2021, there was an increase in the turnover of dry cargo in the seaports of the Azov-Black Sea (20.3%), Far Eastern (12.4%) and Baltic (7.4%) basins. In particular, an increase in cargo turnover mainly due to dry cargo was registed in the seaports of Vanino – by 37.5%, Nakhodka – by 3.5%, Vladivostok – by 26.8%, Tuapse – by 7.2%, Taman – by 26.5%, Kavkaz – by 29.7%, Azov – by 71.9%, Eysk – by 9%, Taganrog – by 6.9%, Vyborg – by 73.1%.

It is worth noting that the largest increase among dry cargoes was shown by transshipment of coal and coke by 14.2%, chemical and mineral fertilizers by 6.7%, ore by 5.1%. Cargo turnover of bulk cargo increased by 39.3% due to an increase in grain transshipment by 48.6%. General cargo turnover increased by 0.9% due to an increase in transshipment of refrigerated cargo by 8.1% (including fish and fish products by 22.9%), ferrous metals – by 2.9%. The transshipment of rolled cargoes (ro-ro) increased by 5.1%, cargo in containers – by 1.3%.

The company's revenue regarding harbor dues for the two months of this year decreased by 3%, or to 3.498 billion rubles, due to a decrease in the total volume indicators of serviced vessels by 2%, or to 262.1 million GT, including due to overseas vessels with a share of 85% to 223.7 million GT (-3%), with an increase in the volume of cabotage vessels by 4.3%, or to 38.4 million GT.

The decrease in volume indicators of serviced vessels abroad is mainly due to a decrease in the transshipment of bulk cargo (oil and oil products) in the seaports of Novorossiysk (in January 2021), Primorsk, Ust-Luga, cargo in containers in the seaport of Big Port Saint Petersburg, rolling cargo in the seaports of Kavkaz and Kerch; decrease in the number of vessels entering the seaports of Nakhodka, Vladivostok, Vostochny and Kaliningrad for bunkering purposes.

At the same time, the increase in volumetric indicators of cabotage vessels is due to an increase in the cargo turnover of grain cargo in the seaports of Azov, Kavkaz, as well as the number of vessels transiting the Kerch-Yenikalsky Canal.

The number of pilotages implemented by FSUE “Rosmorport” in January-February 2021 decreased by 1% or to 23.7 operations compared to the same period of 2020 due to a decrease in vessel entries amid the pandemic.
