World Maritime Day 2015

Celebrations on World Maritime Day were held on the previous week.

The holiday is included in international holidays list of the United Nations.

Traditionally World Maritime Day is celebrated on the last full week of September. As it was established at 10th meeting of the International Maritime Organization, IMO, the holiday has been celebrated since 1978.

The holiday aims to attract society’s attention to issues of safe marine transportation and bioresources preservation.

This year professional education and training in shipping were chosen as the topical questions.

The topic can hardly be underestimated. Shipping education and training of future sailors are crucial issues in safe shipping and a guaranty of rational consumption of natural resources.

Sailors must be trained and prepared, possess sufficient experience, proper skills and qualification, meet requirements for their job to work for safety of human lives, careful treatment of marine inhabitants and cargo transshipment. Skills and professionalism of sailors can be guaranteed only by effective training. That is why it is so important to provide future masters, crew members and other personnel with appropriate education.
