From 5th to 10th of July, 2010 in Kara Sea diesel engine-electric icebreaker “Saint-Petersburg” tests will be held

During the period from July, 5 till July, 10th icebreaker “Saint-Petersburg” will pass planned ice tests.

On June, 29th the icebreaker arrived to Murmansk, and on July, 3rd begun transition to Kara Sea. The expedition team included representatives of Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute, Central Scientific Research Institute of the Maritime Fleet, Institute of Arctic and Antarctic Regions, JSC “Baltyisky Zavod”, FSUE “Rosmorport” and other experts.

During the test in Kara Sea experts will check up icebreaking capacity of the vessel, its maneuverable qualities, screw and rudder columns operation, navigation and communication system, other parameters, according to test procedure.

Diesel engine-electric icebreaker “Saint-Petersburg” is a double-decked vessel with an Icebreaker 6 ice class with two all-wheel drive screw and rudder columns of 16 megawatt total capacity. Displacement of the icebreaker is about 10 thousand tons, length — 114 m, width — 27,5 m, draught — 8,5 m, speed in pure water — 16 knots.

The icebreaker hull is intended for work in ices to 1,2 m thick, icebreaking pilotage of vessels to 50 m wide, towage in ice and pure water.

Equipment of the vessel allows involving it in rescue works, treatment of oil spills in the high sea and for fire extinguishing.
