Coastal VTS of North-Western Basin Branch Prevents an Emergency Situation Near Gogland Island

On March 2, 2016 in the coverage area of  Coastal VTS of North-Western Basin Branch near Gogland island an emergency situation was prevented.

Serdolik cargo vessel (banner of Russia) with a gross tonnage of 3.5 thousand tons, cruising from the seaport Greater Port of Saint-Petersburg to the seaport Szczecin (the Republic of Poland), suddenly went off the established traffic lane 7 miles to the east of Gogland island and started to veer to the right, dangerously approaching the coastal part of the island.

A Coastal VTS operator on duty Sergey Davydov, who controlled vessel traffic in this area that day, noticed the vessel dangerously veering off and took all the necessary measures to establish a connection with the vessel crew.

After the connection with the vessel was established and it received the appropriate warning from Coastal VTS of the North-Western Basin Branch, the vessel crew changed course to the left and returned to the established vessel traffic line at the section of traffic separation schemes in the area of Gogland Island in accordance with the navigation regime in the Baltic Sea and Lake Ladoga.

Due to the quick and professional actions of the Coastal VTS operator on duty Sergey Davydov, the emergency situation was eliminated and possible cargo vessel grounding was prevented.
