New underwater disposal for bottom soil extracted in the seaports of Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik put into operation

On September 7, 2018 FSUE “Rosmorport” obtained a permit issued by the Russian Federal Agency for Oversight of Natural Resource Usage to bury Bottom Soil No. 150M extracted during dredging operations in the seaport of Novorossiysk on a newly created disposal. The document has been issued for a term of 10 years.

The average depth of the new disposal is 1,200 meters. The burial of soil at this depth does not cause any damage to fish resources because the high concentration of sulphureted hydrogen at the depths of over 200 meters makes the waters of the Black Sea devoid of life.

In compliance with the above-mentioned permit, bottom soil will be buried in the disposal located 23 kilometers from the seaport of Novorossiysk. Bottom soil which has been extracted during dredging operations in the water area of the seaport of Gelendzhik will be buried in the same disposal.

Until recently the FSUE “Rosmorport” Azovo-Chernomorsky Basin Branch used Disposal No. 922 to bury bottom soil extracted during dredging operations in the seaport of Novorossiysk. This disposal is located at a distance of 123 kilometers from the work area. The delivery of bottom soil to the burial area led to the considerable price rise of dredging operations.

The dredging operations in the seaports of Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik and burying bottom soil on the new disposal allow the enterprise to reduce costs on soil transportation and facilitate environmental wellbeing of the Black Sea.
