The Novorossiysk Icebreaker Returns to Murmansk Seaport

The Novorossiysk icebreaker assigned to the Murmansk Branch operational management returned to the seaport of Murmansk on October 19 after the 40-day voyage.

In accordance with the scientific program the Novorossiysk icebreaker assisted in carrying out research studies related to the physical impact on icebergs in the water areas of Barents and Kara Seas and Laptev Sea in the interests of FSBI “Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute”. During the experiments towing of icebergs has been provided with a floating rope, through dynamic effect by propeller jets of the icebreaker, and with water sprays created by fire monitors of the icebreaker.

For the first time the experiments on icebergs towing were carried out by the Kapitan Dranitsyn icebreaker of the Murmansk Branch in September-October 2016.

The Novorossiysk icebreaker voyage made in October continues the program of research studies, that is aimed at ensuring the safety of vessels and drilling outfits in the water areas of northern seas.

The Novorossiysk icebreaker will stay in the seaport of Murmansk till October 24, 2017. Then it will leave for the seaport of Big Port Saint Petersburg for scheduled maintenance.
