402 Years of the Arkhangelsk Seaport Pilotage Services

On 21 November Arkhangelsk saw festive events dedicated to 402-th birthday of the Arkhangelsk Seaport Pilotage Services.

In the framework of the events Museum of folk arts and crafts of Prymorye represented an exhibition in memory of a great pilot of Arkhangelsk – A.S.Baskakov, and also held a welcome reception for the pilot’s relatives. For these events the museum has got assistance from the Arkhangelsk Branch.

Aleksandre Stepanovich Baskakov worked as a pilot’s trainee, pilot and senior pilot in Arkhangelsk Seaport during 1936-1990. For his working experience of more than half a century not a single accident happened while pilotage of various vessels. He has also trained a lot of pilots, having thought them all the pilotage wisdoms.
During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 he performed more than 2 thous. pilotages of the Northern Convoys to and from Arkhangelsk Seaport, was rewarded the medals “For Valorous Labour during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945” and “For  Defense of the Soviet Arctic».
A.S. Baskakov is the author of several guidelines for approaching wharves by large-tonnage vessels in Arkhangelsk Seaport and for mooring operations”. His recommendations for pilots and ship masters on maneuvering a vessel in Arkhangelsk Seaport basin have been added to the Book No. 4105 “Guidelines for navigation of vessels in the lower course of Severnaya Dvina river”and remain utilized, moreover, they are a manuel for Arkhangelsk pilots.
