On November 2, 2018, just before the National Unity Day, the international educational action "Great ethnographic dictation" took place in the seaport of Murmansk on one of the FSUE "Rosmorport" icebreakers.

This action occurs in Russia for the third consecutive year. FSUE "Rosmorport" participate in the "Great ethnographic dictation" for the second time.

This year the captain and crew members of the Novorossiysk icebreaker, as well as employees of the FSUE "Rosmorport" Murmansk branch were able to check their knowledge in the field of culture and history of the peoples of Russia. The dictation participants, including mariners of all specializations and posts, from sailors and sea-cooks to mechanics and captains, representatives of different regions and nationalities of Russia, answered 30 test questions related to the peoples of Russia, their cultural and linguistic peculiarities, as well as ethnic or national traditions, which became the common heritage of Russian citizens.

Participants noted that there were questions of varying difficulty, some required accurate knowledge, and others could be answered using geography or history knowledge. Captain Yaroslav Verzhbitsky explained why the icebreaker became a platform for carrying out the ethnical dictation: "The icebreaker crew is set to obtain new knowledge. The entire crew is ready to solve not only the issues of ethnographic dictation, but also the important state tasks in the field of technological breakthrough in the exploration of the Russian Arctic".

The dictation is a cultural and educational event that allows to assess the knowledge of the population about the peoples living in Russia and the general level of ethnocultural literacy. The knowledge of one’s own history is the basis for mutual respect and harmony between people of various nationalities. The action task is to form a desire among its participants to study their origins, traditions of their ancestors, as well as to learn more about those who live nearby.

The results of the action organized by the Federal Agency for Nationalities will be summed up by the Russia’s Constitution Day on December 12, 2018.
