The Professor Khlyustin training ship returns upon completion of scientific expedition

The Russian Geographical Society expedition ended in Vladivostok on October 21, 2019. The aim of the expedition was to monitor the radiation situation in the Sea of Japan and the Kuril-Kamchatka region of the Pacific Ocean. The research event organized with support of FSUE “Rosmorport” lasted for about one month during which specialists of the Non-Commercial Organization “Polar Researches Fund ‘Polar Foundation’”, the Federal Publicly Funded Institution of Science “Shirshov’s Oceanology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences”, Khlopin Radium Institute JSC, the Federal Budget Institution of Science “Professor Ramzayev Saint Petersburg Research Institute of Radiation Hygiene” and the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute” continued to study the aftermath of the disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

During the expedition, specialists took samples of water, air, soil, plants and sea animals. They also carried out measurements of the radiation background on the shore. Primary models have been studied aboard the Professor Khlyustin: the training pilot room has been reequipped into a scientific laboratory.

At present, a total of 115 cadets of Nevelskoy Maritime State University undergo training aboard the vessel and study the details of maritime professions. During the voyage, the cadets provided aid and support to members of the research expedition: joint trainings were held to use individual life saving equipment. Training also included abandon drills, storm ladder descents and ascents. For their part, scientists gave a series of oceanologic lectures for cadets and crewmembers of the Professor Klyustin. Specialists explained that the radiation spread in the sea and in the coastal zone remains a priority task. It is necessary to renovate such data for the environmental purposes and for the safe development of nuclear power engineering.
