Nadezhda Sailing Ship Moored in the Seaport of Sochi

On September 22, 2016 after midday Nadezhda sailing ship moored in the Kruiznaya Harbor of the seaport of Sochi. The vessel entered the seaport and not changing its traditions the sailing ship cadets greeted audience with ceremonial forming-up aloft, once again having demonstrated professionalism and skills of the team. When entering the seaport water area ceremonial music was heard from Nadezhda board. The other vessels participating in the regatta greeted the sailing ship with ship's whistles. The city residents also warmly welcomed the vessel, inspite of pouring rain they came to the seaport to take part in the Black Sea Tall Ships 2016 events.

During tough struggle for victory in the race transition along the route from Novorossiysk to Sochi, on September 20 the Nadezhda training sailing ship fore mast had been broken between the 3rd and the 4th sailyards due to guy line break. The incident occurred in the toughest weather conditions: squally wind of up to 27 m/s, and wave height was above 3.5 meters. Powerful forces on spars and ropes resulted in guy line break, which supported the mast and, as a consequence, the mast was broken.

Meanwhile, the Nadezhda sailing ship master Sergey Vorobiev navigated the vessel from the command bridge. Skillful and resolute actions allowed achieving stabilisation of the vessel and avoiding injury to cadets and crew members. Emergency work was timely performed on the vessel. In order to maximally lighten the construction, crew and cadets rapidly doused sails under storm conditions, which allowed avoiding dangerous heeling and tripping. Vessels speed rapidly reduced. The achieved advantage in the race was lost at once.

Then the sailing ship headed for the seaport of Sochi cargo area for repairing. In under two days collosal work had been performed on demounting of standing rigging and tracking, and also parting the damaged part of the mast. The vessel crew using port cranes within the shortest possible time cut all the damaged sails and unmounted operational and temporary mountings on the broken part of the mast.

The works were carried out at height of about 40 meters and was complicated due to tough weather conditions - there was pouring rain and gusty wind.

Currently, Nadezhda sailing ship and its crew and cadets are ready to continue the race at the final stage of the Black Sea regatta and together with other participants to fight for the first place.
