Solemn Farewell Ceremony for Professor Khlyustin Training Ship

On 25 September 2014 the Professor Khlyustin training ship, which had been secured to FSUE “Rosmorport” on the right of economic management and transferred to the Far Eastern Basin Branch of the enterprise, left for an expedition to the Sea of Japan and the Kuril-Kamchatka region of the Pacific Ocean.

Among the participants of the solemn farewell ceremony were Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Ivanov, Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev, Aide to President Igor Levitin, Governor of the Primorye Territory Vladimir Miklushevsky, management of the FSUE “Rosmorport” and the Far Eastern Basin Branch, other officials.

The participants of the expedition received a testimonial from the President of the Russian Geographical Society, Minister of Defense of Russia Sergei Shoigu

The expedition is organized by the State Institute of Oceanography in the framework of the Russian Geographical Society project to explore the distant consequences of the accident at “Fukushima-1″ Nuclear Power Plant in Japan. The data to be received by researches will help to continue monitoring of the radiological situation in the region and will contribute to the knowledge of the processes of transformation and accumulation of radionuclides in the Pacific ocean. A deep water cable winch set on board of the ship will enable successful completion of the planned programme. It will help to collect water samples and sound ocean waters at the depth of up to 6 kilometres.

Apart form the research team 120 cadets, students and young scientists left for the expedition in order to undergo training.

The expedition at the Professor Khlyustin training ship is expected to last 28 days.

The Professor Khlyustin two-deck training ship of project B-80 was constructed at a shipyard in the town of Szczecin (Poland) in 1973. The vessel took the name after an outstanding Russian naval figure, professor, doctor of naval sciences, engineer rear admiral Boris Khlyustin.

The vessel is designed for training of 100 cadets at a time under command of professors, research work, in particular, with the use of underwater machines of different purposes for inspection of the global ocean, and also for research of the shelf areas of the Far Eastern and Arctic regions.
