Khersones sailing ship congratulates Artek children’s center on the jubilee

For 95 years the Artek international children’s center has been keeping and multiplying the best traditions of the pedagogic work and health promotion for children. The FSUE “Rosmorport” legendary Khersones sailing ship arrived at the center on June 16, 2020 to congratulate it on the jubilee.

Thematic partners, who are ready to share their knowledge with schoolchildren, help Artek create extended education programs for children. From 2015 FSUE “Rosmorport” acts as a permanent partner of the Artek international children’s center in preparing and implementing maritime programs for the purpose of early vocational guidance of children. In total, over 800 children learnt the ropes of maritime skills in major children’s centers of the country.

Under the FSUE “Rosmorport” themed programs boys and girls master sailing ship skills, study modern technical achievements in the field of marine facilities and increase their knowledge about the history and traditions of the Russian fleet. Children acquire the first skills of maritime affairs: they learn to read stars and bend knots, study the Morse code and the semaphore, create and present their own projects.

The excursions organized as part of the FSUE “Rosmorport” educational programs are aimed at educating the future generation and popularizing maritime professions, as well as supporting maritime traditions. These shifts are a fascinating and unforgettable experience for children that will, perhaps, help them choose their future profession.

Every year the Khersones frigate puts in the water area of the children’s center. Crewmembers and cadets undergoing training on the Khersones sailing ship organize master classes and maritime discipline classes for participants in thematic shifts and introduce young mariners to the ship’s construction. Children visit the command bridge, stand abaft the wheel, and pass through the sail loft, crew quarters and classrooms.

This year the children had an opportunity to see the Khersones historical look. During the repairing works, the “Golden Albatross” galleon (head) figure, the symbol of Cape Horn that the frigate had rounded in 1997 for the first time, has been installed on the stem of the ship. The initial model of the Albatross has been lost. Then, when the figure was found in 2015 it was beyond repair. While preparing for the 2020 navigation the sailing ship has again found its magic figure.
