The FSUE “Rosmorport” Dikson icebreaker continues its efforts aimed at ensuring safe delivery of the Alademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant to a permanent base location in the seaport of Pevek. The icebreaker works day and night in a routine mode. It has already passed 650 nautical miles.

The towing operation started on August 23, 2019. The escort convoy, including the Dikson icebreaker and two towboats, has entered Barents sea, passed through the Kola Bay, the Teribersky light tower and Kildin Island. At present, the convoy has crossed the beam line of Bely Island in the Kara Sea. The convoy is moving to the Vilkitsky Strait.

The weather is favorable: the air temperature is plus 6, the wind blows northerly and from the Northwest up to six meters per second. There are no ices. No sea disturbances are observed. The Beaufort scale shows force one. Although the icebreaker can move in any weather: 13000 HP provide the necessary power reserve in case of the appearance of ice, the contrary wind and heavy waves. It is expected that it will take less than a month to reach the place of destination depending on the weather conditions and other possible circumstances.

The Dikson icebreaker of the FSUE “Rosmorport” Arkhangelsk Branch has been taking part in major Arctic projects for several years. In 2007-2008 the vessel serviced the Varandey stationary marine ice protection export terminal for tankers laying operations and their protection from drifting ices.

The icebreaker has taken part in rescue operations several times. The last time it happened in 2011 when the Kapitan Kuznetsov motor ship in distress had been successfully towed to the seaport of Arkhangelsk.

The Dikson icebreaker also carried out a unique operation: it towed the Amazon gas developing self-elevating drilling rig to the seaport of Murmans from the seaport of Yamburg.

Jointly with the Captain Dranitsyn icebreaker the Dikson took part in an international expedition to determine a shelf with Sevmorgeo near Wrangel Island.

During the 2016 navigation, the icebreaker provided support for two vessels – the Valery Vasilyev and the Andrei Osipov to the beam line of Kanin Nos Cape from the Sannikov Strait in the East Siberian Sea. That same year amidst flood waves in the head of the Yenisei River the Dikson has provided support for the HHL ELBE motor ship with maximum allowable draft to the seaport of Dudinka for urgent loading-unloading operations.

At present, the icebreaker provides support operations in the White Sea and the seaport of Arkhangelsk. In the summer the Dikson has often provided support for and carried towing operations of different facilities in the Arctic region. In late summer the icebreaker provides support for vessels to the seaport of Sabetta and on the sea leg between Sabetta and Belyi Island.
