FSUE “Rosmorport” celebrates State Flag Day

By tradition on August 22, 2019 FSUE “Rosmorport” took part in the celebrations marking State Flag Day, one of the major symbols of centuries-long history, the might and grandeur of our country.

The day of the Russian tricolor was celebrated throughout the country: the hoisting flag ceremonies took place in the branches of the enterprise from Kamchatka to Kaliningrad.

The Far Eastern Branch was the first to celebrate the holiday due to the geographic features. The torch has been taken up by vessels operating north of the Arctic Circle: the Novorossiysk icebreaker, which is now ensuring navigation safety on the Northern Sea Route, as well as the dredgers “The Severnaya Dvina” and “The Beloye More” operating in the seaport of Sabetta and other vessels of the Murmansk and Arkhangelsk branches. In the west the North-Western Basin Branch also took part in the holiday. The southern region – the Makhachkala, Azov and Azovsky-Chernomorsky basin branches celebrated State Flag Day.

The pride of the enterprise’s fleet, the Mir, the Nadezhda and the Khersones frigates also joined the action. Cadets undergoing training aboard the frigates have been given the right to hoist the Russian flags.

The torch also involved the Knyaz Vladimir cruise motor ship. A solemn ceremony was held aboard the vessel with the participation of the crew and passenger of the liner.

The festive program is planned in all branches of FSUE “Rosmorport”: Russian flags wave on all vessels and flag poles of administrative buildings of the enterprise.

For reference

The date of the celebrations marking State Flag Day was officially approved in 1994. However, the history of the tricolor goes back over three centuries. It is thought that for the first time the flag was hoisted during the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich on the first Russian warship “The Oryol”. But Peter I was recognized the father of the Russian national symbol. Peter I himself designed a draft right-angled cloth and defined the order of white, sky-blue and ruby-colored strips.

Since then the Russian flag has become an inalienable part of the fleet culture. The tricolor is hoisted at 8 a.m. every day and hauls down at sunset on vessels having a flag certificate pursuant to the Commercial Maritime Code.
